About SSC CGL

SSC CGL stands for Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level exam. It is a national level exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for recruitment to various Group B and Group C posts in various ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India

SSC CGL Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The SSC CGL exam is conducted in four stages, which are as follows:

  1. Tier-I: This is a computer-based exam that consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The duration of the SSC CGL exam is 60 minutes. The questions are divided into 4 sections – General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. The exam carries a total of 200 marks, with each section carrying 25 marks.
  2. Tier-II: This is also a computer-based exam that consists of four papers. The duration of each paper is 2 hours. Paper-I is Quantitative Ability, Paper-II is English Language and Comprehension, Paper-III is Statistics, and Paper-IV is General Studies (Finance and Economics). The total marks for each paper are 200, and the total marks for all four papers combined are 800.
  3. Tier-III: This is a descriptive paper that is conducted offline. The duration of the examination is 60 minutes. Candidates are required to write an essay and a letter/application. The exam carries a total of 100 marks.
  4. Tier-IV: This is a computer proficiency test/skill test/document verification. It is conducted to test the candidate’s computer skills and proficiency. The test includes data entry speed test (DEST) and computer proficiency test (CPT).

Candidates who qualify in Tier-I are eligible to appear for Tier-II. Similarly, candidates who qualify in Tier-II are eligible to appear for Tier-III. Candidates who clear all three stages are eligible to appear for Tier-IV. The final selection is based on the cumulative performance of the candidate in all four stages.

Some Important Points in SSC CGL Exam Pattern

Note-I: In Tier-I, there will be a negative marking of 0.50 for each wrong answer.
Note-II: In Tier-II, there will be a negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer in Paper-II (English Language and Comprehension) and of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer in Paper-I, Paper-III and Paper-IV.
Note-III: In Tier-II, Paper-I and Paper-II are compulsory for all the posts.
Note-IV: In Tier-II, Paper-III will be for only those candidates who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) and who are shortlisted in Tier-I for this Post/ Paper.
Note-V: In Tier-II, Paper-IV will be for only those candidates who apply for the posts of Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer and who are shortlisted in Tier-I for these Posts/ Paper.

How to prepare Merit List

The merit will be prepared on overall performance in Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III. However, the candidate will need to qualify all the tiers i.e Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III separately. There will be no sectional cut-off.
